I was impressed with this when I saw it 20 years ago, now I am way too skeptical, it’s an obvious fake. Hollywood tyres that squeal around minor bends as he passes taxi’s at +10% speed (what 50-60kms) and fourth gear down a straight and still marginally passing slow side lane cars.. hmm, I wish it were true but it’s so not. In fact now for me it’s hardly impressive.

it’s not a ferrari, for starters the sounds are all out of wack, the car too slow and the suspension too soft… its a old Mercedes-Benz 450SEL 6.9.

Although often cited as using a 275, this was filmed from a camera under the bumper of a Mercedes 450 SEL 6.9, with an automatic transmission – the sound was edited onto the film.

In more detail from the Making OF

The film shows an eight-minute drive through Paris at 5.30 AM in August from Porte Dauphine to Montmartre in a Mercedes-Benz 450SEL 6.9.

The soundtrack is dubbed with the sound from a Ferrari 275GT

In the Making Of he goes on to say that on the second straight (starting at 45 sec) he hits “deux cents normalement” that is 200kph – normally!!

When asked why he drove a Mercedes and not a sports car to make the drive he responses “specifically for the suspension – to give a more fluid ride/image”.

When asked about the rumlour that a professional driver drove the car Claude Lelouch laughs and says “no it was me”.
